Pictures MUST credit: NASA US space agency NASA has given a $4.6 billion contract to three companies to each develop a Moon rover that will be used by astronauts on future lunar missions. Only one will eventually be selected to build the official lunar terrain vehicle known as an LTV. It will be used by crews for NASA's Artemis missions to travel around the Moon's surface, conducting scientific research. It will also be used in preparations for human missions to Mars. The three companies, the USA's Intuitive Machines from Texas, , Lunar Outpost in Colorado and Europe's Venturi Astrolab in Monaco, have been commissioned to advance the capabilities of the LTV. The Artemis programme will put humans back on the lunar surface by the end of the decade. The LTV must be able to handle the extreme conditions at the Moon's South Pole and feature advanced technologies for power management, autonomous driving, and state of the art communications and navigation systems. Crews will use it to explore, transport scientific equipment, and collect samples of the lunar surface, much farther than they could on foot, enabling increased science returns.
