Pictures must credit: CBS / 60 Minutes Author Salman Rushdie has given his first TV interview since losing an eye to an attacker at a public event. And the 76-year-old revealed they surgeon who treated him said he was lucky because the assailant did not know how to use a knife properly. Otherwise he would now be dead. The Indian-born British-American had a fatwa issued against him in 1989 by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini. It was over Rushdie's fourth novel The Satanic Verses, condemned by some muslim leaders as blasphemous to the prophet Muhammed. A bounty was offered to anyone who would execute him forcing him to go into hiding. In August 2022 he was attacked at a literary festival in Chautauqua, New York He had been scheduled to give a speech about the United States being a refuge for exiled artists. Rushdie faced a long recovery and ultimately lost his right eye and has some nerve damage to his face.
