Opis:
Premier implant cardiaque artificiel humain - Pictures must credit: BiVACOR An artificial heart that uses floating magnet technology has been implanted in a human patient for the first time. The device is acting as a bridge to an eventual heart transplant. It is not the first artificial heart to be used in a human but it is the first to employ so-called magnetically levitated technology known as maglev. The implant was done at the USA's Texas Heart Institute with the device's developer, BiVACOR. It was the first-in-human implantation of the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart and was part of an early feasibility study by the US Food and Drug Administration. No personal details have been released about the patient. The mechanical heart is a titanium rotary blood pump with a single moving part that utilises a magnetically levitated rotor to pump blood and replace both ventricles of a failing heart. The clinical study aims to evaluate the safety and performance of the BiVACOR heart as a bridge-to-transplant solution for patients with severe ventricular heart failure. Following the implantation, four additional patients are to be enrolled for the study. The BiVACOR device is suitable in size for most men and women and is said to be capable of providing enough cardiac output for an adult male undergoing exercise. It uses magnetic levitation technology, the same principle used in high-speed trains. Picture supplied by JLPPA
