Pictures must credit: Lucara Diamond Corp A huge diamond has been unearthed in Africa tipping the scales at l 2,492 carats /498.4 grams. The find is said to be one of the largest rough diamonds ever found. The biggest gem-quality rough stone ever found was the Cullinan diamond dug up at Premier Mine in Cullinan, Transvaal, South Africa in 1905. It weighed 3,106 carats / 621 grams. When cut, it yielded 105 stones, including the Great Star of Africa and others that are part of the British Crown Jewels. The new stone was detected at the Karowe Diamond Mine in Botswana run by Canada-based Lucara Diamond Corp using x-ray based technology. The system used is called Mega Diamond Recovery or MDR for short. It was installed in 2017 to identify and preserve large, high-value diamonds. Picture supplied by JLPPA
