The Icelandic Sheepdog, which is believed to have existed for over a thousand years in the Nordics, will become the 224th pedigree dog breed in the UK in the new year, when it becomes recognised by The Kennel Club, the UK's registry body for pedigree dogs.It is the fourth new breed to be recognised in the UK in the last five years. The Icelandic Sheepdog is Iceland's native breed of dog and has ancient origins, having been referred to in the Sagas more than a thousand years ago. It is thought to be the descendant of the dogs brought to Iceland by original Viking settlers to herd livestock, including the Icelandic horse. They have a dense coat, foxy face, pointed ears, a bushy, curling tail, and come in several colours including black and white, red and white and smoky grey., Credit:Ágúst Ágústsson / Avalon
