Duckweed, reeds, and rubbish on the surface of The River Thames. The first day of the Henley Royal Regatta saw the worst water quality testing results on the Henley stretch of the River Thames so far this year. Less than a mile from the finish line, citizen scientists, funded by Henley Town Council, recorded a reading of 11,000 E. coli colony-forming units (cfu) per 100ml at Marsh Lock on July 1. This reading exceeds the upper limit of 900 cfu for water users. On the day of testing, there was no rain, the flow rate was 6.94 cubic metres per second, and water temperatures reached 23.3C, the second highest recorded this year., Credit:Geoffrey Swaine / Avalon
