She plays real life US pro fighter Christy Martin, ditching her long blonde hair for a brown perm and later cornrows. Throughout her career, Martin was nicknamed The Coal Miner's Daughter in reference to her father's occupation. Christy is said to be "the most successful and prominent female boxer in the United States” and the person who "legitimised” women's participation in the sport of boxing. She then began training with boxing coach, Jim Martin, who became her husband in 1991 when she was aged 22 and he was 47. Christy referred to the marriage as one of convenience, She claimed her husband was emotionally and physically abusive throughout their relationship, In 2010 Martin told her husband she wanted a divorce. She was stabbed several times and shot at least once and left for dead by her husband after an argument at home. In April 2012 Martin was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years, dying in jail in November 2024. Christy married former ring rival Lisa Holewyne on November 25, 2017 and is now CEO of a boxing promotion company. The movie, called Christy, tells her life story and stars Ben Foster as her ex-husband. Flamboyant boxing promoter Don King is played by Chad L. Coleman. The film is out in November..
