Picture MUST credit: Zoox A world-first driverless taxi service has launched in US gambling capital Las Vegas offering free rides. The service, run by Amazon spin-off company Zoox, officially started on September 10 in the Nevada hot spot. Rides are free and available through a Zoox app, which can be downloaded on both iOS and Android devices. Zoox says it is now the first company in history to provide a fully autonomous ride-hailing service in a purpose-built driverless robotaxi with room for four passengers. The all electric autonomous vehicle has a top speed of 56 km/h. The vehicle is designed from the ground up as a driverless transport, featuring two rows of seats and floor-to-ceiling windows, with no steering wheel or pedals Las Vegas was described as the ideal launch city as a "vibrant and exciting destination” that welcomes over 40 million visitors annually. The Zoox app lets users take a ride from several destinations on and around the Vegas Strip. The service is free so that users riders can become familiar with Zoox, and share their feedback before the service is scaled up.
